Methods necessary for analyzing and solving related problems to design, operations, and improvements of the systems that create products and/or services in a global supply chain environment are investigated and emphasized. To create awareness that an organization must reduce costs and be competitive, but organizations today must adopt sustainable business practices. (Ch. 1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 13, 14) SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE YOU ARE EXPECTED TO BRING INTO THIS COURSE: 1. From prerequisites MGT 3303 and QMST 2333 (or IE 3330 or TECH 3364) skills include: An appreciation for the use of probability in solving business problems An appreciation for the ethical use of statistics The ability to compute and interpret descriptive statistics The ability to use analytical and critical thinking to solve data-based problems The ability to use MS Excel to compute and graph statistical data A basic understanding of the principals of Management Understanding of Management terms and concepts 2. Professional behavior PREREQUISITES: Mgt 3303 and one of the following courses QMST 2333 or IE 3330 or TECH 3364. COURSE POLICIES: A. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODOLOGY: Lectures given by your professor and student participation through a variety of class activities are the main instruments for conducting this class. Student participation will be in a team format and individually. Students are expected to read chapters in advance before each class period. A detailed tentative class schedule of the chapters to be covered during the semester is provided at the end of this document. Computer software such as MS Excel templates will be used for some assignments. Teams will be used for some class activities. B. ATTENDANCE: I expect you to be present in every class period, and to be prepared to participate in-class exercises, to take active participation in discussion of assignments during the time periods designated for this activity, to provide your opinion and/or interpretation of the material prepared for class, to make an effort to enhance the class environment, and so forth. Everybody is expected to be in class on time and for the whole class period. Attendance will be taken at random times at the beginning of class. Intermittent class arrival and departure disrupts class sessions; please see classroom civility section. If you need to leave class early, let me know in advance; else, you will be considered absent for that class period. Four absences will bring your final grade down one letter grade. Whether you are present in class or not, you are responsible for keeping up with your assignments, changes in the course schedule, etc. If a student misses a class, for whatever reason, the student is expected to get the notes from the day(s) missed from another student before the next class meeting. Only after the student has reviewed the material on her/his own will Dr. Temponi answer any questions over the material missed. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Assignments: The assignments during the semester include: (1) Homework problems and discussion questions for each chapter, (2) Current events from library resources, (3) cases, (4) a variety of in-class exercises. Techniques required to work on the assignments will be explained & illustrated in class before the sessions designated for discussion of assignments; Cecilia Temponi Jan. 01/12/2012 Page 2 of 5 consequently, you should be able to engage in the discussion sessions for problems. Assignments are your responsibility and will be discussed in class. In-class exercises might be collected for credit. There is no make-up for this segment of the grade. Current Events will be conducted in groups; all team members must be present to receive credit. After groups are formed, a date for the group presentation of current events will be assigned. A team folder will be collected three times during the semester with a selection of problems, cases, and other assignments. Guidelines for Current Events and the team notebook are posted on TRACS. Any changes to the schedule of classes and assignments will be announced in class and posted on TRACS. You are responsible for keeping up with all changes announced in class whether you are present or not. Examinations: There will be three (3) exams and a comprehensive final. Each exam will be given according to the course schedule. Grades will be posted on TRACS about two class periods after the test was taken. The total grade for the TESTS component of your final grade will be the summation of THE BEST THREE tests. Each exam consists of (1) concepts and terminology in your textbook (you are responsible for reading the assigned chapters), (2) problems evaluating methods learned in class. Once grades are posted on TRACS, you have THREE-class periods to review your test in my office. Make-up Examinations: If a student misses one of the scheduled tests during the semester, the student will have the opportunity to take a comprehensive test the day of the final exams to make up this missed exam. The student will drop the test grade of the test he/she missed. There is no make-up on any other of the assignments. Grade Evaluation: The grading scale in points is as follows: A = 400 and up; B = 350-399; C = 300-349; D = 250-299; F = 249 or less. Total Tests = Best 3 of 4 tests (Test 01 + Test 02 + Test 03 + Final) ...... 300 points Current Event& ........................................................................ 50 points ------------------------ TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS 450 points Team Notebook& ........................................................................ 100 points & Your individual grade on team activities will be affected by peer's evaluations Peer evaluations will be conducted every time you turn in/conduct a team activity. As an illustration of how peer evaluations will influence your grade, here is an example: Your team, let us say team 12, receives a total grade of 90 points in a team assignment. Your peers evaluate you and you evaluate them on a scale of 1-10 (1 = worst and 10 = best). Thus, anyone receiving less than 8.5/10 (85%) from their team will receive the earned percentage applied to the team's grade. For instance, Team 12 earned 30 points in Notebook #2. If member A of team 12 was rated with a composite score of 7.5 out of 10. This student will receive only 75% of the team's grades. (In other words, 30 x 0.75 = 22.5 - the student (member A) will receive 22.5 points out of the 30 points earned by team 12). Other: All grades will be posted on TRACS. All additional chapter materials are listed under "Resources". C. CLASSROOM CIVILITY: No recording/No picture taking of any kind during my lectures. If you have an issue regarding an assignment, a test, or any other classroom related issues, please stop by my office during my office hours and present your issue/concern in a professional manner. I will address any of your questions and/or concerns. Production & Operations Management related materials are the only things you should be using during the class period. Class materials from other subjects/courses are NOT acceptable during the class period designated for Production & Operations Management. If this becomes a problem, we will address the problem accordingly. No laptops, No iPads, No headphones or any music devices during class time unless you are asked to use the laptop/iPad for a specific purpose. ZERO TOLERANCE ON CELL PHONES, BEEPERS, etc. Cell phones and beepers MUST be turned off (completely) during class period AND kept away from your desk and from you. If a device goes off during class, or you decide to play (text, play games, etc.) with your cell phone during class, you will have two points deducted per occurrence on your final semester grade for this course. Everyone should be in class on time. If you arrive late to class or expect to be leaving class early please see me before/after class; your professional courtesy is appreciated. You are expected to act as an adult and to behave professionally in this class. OTHER: Students with disabilities must arrange their exams in advance with the Academic Testing for Students with Disabilities (ATSD). The course outline provided include the days when your scheduled exams will take place. You must take your exam at the time scheduled for the rest of your classmates. All grades and updates will be posted on TRACS. UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE POLICIES: A. DROP: Dropping means that the student will remain enrolled in at least one hour in the current semester. A "W" will be automatically assigned if the drop procedure is completed on or before 5:00 p.m. on March 22, 2012. After this deadline the student will be unable to drop the course and will receive the grade (A, B, C, D, F, or I) earned in the class. It is suggested that students consult the instructor prior to dropping from the class. B. WITHDRAWAL: Withdrawal means that the student is going to zero hours for the current semester. A "W" will be automatically assigned if the withdrawal procedure is completed on or before 5:00 p.m. on March 22, 2012. After this deadline, the student may withdraw on or before 5:00 p.m. on April 19, 2012. If the student is passing the class on the official date of withdrawal, a "W" grade will be assigned. If the student is failing the class on the date of withdrawal, an "F" grade will be assigned. C. ACADEMIC HONESTY: Submission of any work for a grade for which unauthorized help has been received is termed academic dishonesty and will be grounds for a failing grade in the course. "Unauthorized" is a term used here to designate stealing, copying (with or without permission), collaboration with other individuals, or sharing programming code outside of Cecilia Temponi Jan. 01/12/2012 Page 4 of 5 sanctioned group activities. Students are strongly encouraged to refer to the Texas State student handbook for policies related to academic dishonesty. This instructor views any such act as a clear violation of ethical standards and will take appropriate disciplinary and punitive action. C. HONOR CODE: All students are required to abide by the Texas State University Honor Code. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: A student with a disability may require an accommodation(s) to participate in the course. They must contact the instructor within the first two weeks of the semester. They will be asked to provide documentation from the Office of Disability Services (ODS) at that time. Failure to contact the instructor in a timely manner will delay any accommodations they may be seeking. Ongoing care by a physician does not automatically qualify you as an ODS special needs student. Students are required to file paperwork for accommodations with ODS each semester. Accommodations granted one semester do not automatically carry forward to the next.
