AMS 205 Section C Weekly Writing Assignment #1 The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin Dear Peggy Shaffer, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin defines and embodies the ideal of freedom in American culture in the underlying concepts factored into “The American Dream.” The idea of “The American Dream” is that any individual has the opportunity to better their own well-being through motivation and hard-work. Franklin didn’t like his father’s trade and left his brother’s printing business in Boston as a young man to head to New York and eventually to Philadelphia. He arrived in Philadelphia with little money in his pocket and the scrubby clothes on his back. Only a short formal education, Benjamin Franklin took it upon himself to learn to improve his reading and writing skills. He believed that you should motivate yourself to improve your individual skills rather than have others teach you certain skills. In Philadelphia, Franklin soon started a relationship with Samuel Keimer, who hired him for work.
