Unformatted text preview: Industry Analysis Team Delta Force Perspectives of Business/ Management November 11, 2009 2 Executive Summary The wireless telecommunications industry has become an integral part of American society, providing wireless cellular phone service and data transmission through comprehensive networks around the nation. The companies in this industry are providing a service that most Americans cannot live without, enabling the industry to generate more than $32 billion per year. Verizon Wireless has managed to outperform the rest of the industry, but there is room for improvement. Verizon needs to continue investing in technology research in order to keep up with consumer and competitor demands. Cell phone technology is constantly evolving. Therefore the carrier who can distribute this technology to consumers the most efficiently gains a competitive advantage. Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is digital voice provided via an Internet connection for an extremely low price. Verizon should consider partnering with or acquiring the VoIP mogul Skype in order to control many aspects of this technology. This related diversification would diminish the threat posed by cheap Internet phone calls and give Verizon an opportunity to implement the technology to its advantage in their own services. In order to satisfy the current socio-cultural trend of individualism and flexibility, Verizon should release a phone that allows consumers to customize and personalize the user interface and services to their specifications. Each American has a different day-to-day lifestyle; therefore a phone that can match each lifestyle would be ideal. This phone would compete against AT&Ts smartphones and would drive up overall revenue as customers pay for the upgrade and new service. Although Verizon Wireless is the current leader in the industry, it is important for it to implement these strategies so that it does not become stagnant and get overtaken by the competition. The wireless telecommunications carrier industry is a volatile one, and constant environmental scanning is necessary to foresee dangerous external shifts. 3 Team Delta ForceSOM 122 Table of Contents Title PagePage 1 Executive Summary..Page 2 Table of Contents..Page 3 Introduction.Page 4 Industrys History...Page 5 Industry Forces Economic Trends..Page 8 Sociocultural Trends........Page 11 Technological Changes...Page 14Technological Changes....
