Andrew Lazarow WRT 205 Annotated Bibliography Morse, Jodie; Cullotta, Karen Ann; Frank, Mitch; Goldstein, Andrew; Sutter, Mary. (2000). “Summertime and School Isn’t Easy”. Time Magazine 2/2/11. <http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,997589-1,00.html> The article talks about the pros and cons of eliminating or shortening summer vacation. The article uses examples of other countries that have longer academic calendars and shorter summer vacations. The article continues as it defends summer vacation by explaining how there are lifelong benefits to camping traditions and how teachers need summer vacation to counter exhaustion. On top of that, the article explains that increasing the school year won’t help students catch up in their academics to eliminate the achievement gap. Some students come to school with a 3,000-word vocabulary, and others come with a 30,000 vocabulary. When these students are placed in the same classroom, the 3,000-word student is unable to catch up.
