Time Magazine 2/2/11. < http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,997589-1,00.html > The article talks about the pros and cons of eliminating or shortening summer vacation. The article uses examples of other countries that have longer school years and their success to defend shortening summer vacation. The article then defends summer vacation by explaining how there are lifelong benefits to camping traditions and how teachers need summer vacation to counter exhaustion. On top of that the article explains that increasing the school year won’t help the stragglers catch up and eliminate the achievement gap. This is because some kids come to school with a 3,000-word vocabulary, and others come with 30,000 words, and when we place them in the same classroom from 8 to 2, the 3,000-word child can't begin to catch up.
