Andrew Lazarow 2/1/11 PHI 107 Essay Question #3: The Cosmological Argument 1) Something exists 2) Each contingent thing has a cause. 3) For something to be a cause of something that exists it has to exist. 4) Nothing causes itself. 5) Nothing is caused by anything that it causes. 6) The cause of any contingent thing is itself either contingent or necessary. 7) There cannot be an infinite series of causes and effects 8) Some necessary thing exists An argument is said to be sound if the argument is both valid, and all the premises are actually true. When an argument is valid it is impossible for the conclusion to be false when all the premises are true. To see if the Cosmological Argument is a sound argument you must go line by line and decide if each premise is true or false. I believe everyone can easily agree that premise (1) is true because we interact every day with things that exist, for example, other humans. To decide if premise (2) is true or false we must know the difference between contingent and necessary. A contingent thing is something that
