Things that can be touched Software – programs or “stored instructions” your computer uses to do its work. Can be operating system or application Hardware Hardware Microprocessor (CPU) – brains of the computer. Memory (RAM) – temporary storage that serves as your workspace Storage (DASD) – devices such as disks/tape that can store memory permanent. Input/Output (I/O) – tools that transmit information to or from your computer System Software Helps the computer carry out its basic operating tasks. Operating system – every computer needs one. Utilities – “house keeping” functions A computer can run several different operating systems, but it only runs one at a time. Windows is used because: Windows World wide usage Familiar interface Widest variety of application software available works with Windows Easy to network with other computers Application Software Application Software with a specific function. Typical applications include: Word Processors Spreadsheets Databases Graphics Programs Industry Specific Horizontal Market – applications that can be used by any industry.
