And help us recall random memories Scientists study those who have lost memory to understand those who haven’t HM o He suffered severe epilepsy- seizures, lapse of conscience every few minutes. An experimental surgery was done on him to remove part of his brain that triggered seizures when he was 27. Now down to only one big seizure a year. He lost his ability to have new memories. Only remembers everything before the surgery. o Removed the part of the brain that turns the short term memory into long term memory o Can recall some information about political events and movie stars…can memory be rebuilt? Before HM doctors believed that memory was only in one part of the brain. But doctors discovered the brain has several different memory systems. Declarative memory- “I remember”
