WMST 101 Notes 4/19/11 Women’s work in the home Housework and childcare Remember Christopher in Egalia’s Daughters? Ann Crittenden Devaluation of mother’s work 2 views in the USA: Motherhood= sacrosanct (most important job) Childcare= doing nothing Female childrearing is taken for granted Same in Regalia Women’s labor in raising children Unpaid Not considered “real work” Importance? Not compensated by social security (Vs. Legal nannies) Wages in marriage “belong” to the earner Mothers= economic dependents Housewives and mothers vs. soldiers Taken for granted vs. repaid (GI Bill) What would a fair deal be? Not: wages/benefits (veterans) Recognition Should NOT be: professional marginalization Loss of status Risk of poverty/loss of income Women’s paid work outside home= undercompensated/undervalued Wage gap
