HOW DO PEOPLE COPE WITH STRESS - Stress – a pattern of behavioral and physiological responses to events that match or exceed an organism’s ability to respond in a healthy way o Eustress – stress of positive events (college acceptance) o Distress – stress of negative events (being trapped in traffic when late for a meeting) o Daily hassles – small, day-to-day irritations and annoyances - Stressor – an environmental event or stimulus that threatens an organism by seeming overwhelming o Coping response – any response an organism makes to avoid, escape from, or minimize an aversive stimulus Stress had Physiological Components - Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis o Stressful event Brain perceives it hypothalamus sends a chemical message to pituitary gland which secretes hormones that travel through the bloodstream until adrenal glands (located near kidneys) which secrete cortisol (stress hormone) - Excessive stress disrupts working memory - Chronic stress memory impairments when cortisol damages neurons in hippocampus Responses to Stressors - Fight-or-flight response (Walter Cannon) : physiological preparedness of animals to deal with danger/attacks o Allows organism to direct all energy to dealing with the threat at hand Increased heart rate, redistribution of blood supply to muscles and brain, deeper respiration, dilation of pupils, delaying food digestion - Shelley Taylor realized that women excluded in these tests (female menstrual patterns could make responses mediated by fluctuations in circulating hormones that vary over the menstrual cycle) o Tend-and-befriend response : females’ tendency to protect and care for their offspring and form social alliances rather than flee or fight in response to threat
