Sinziana Velicescu February 7. 2008 Jazz Studies “Young Man With A Horn” by Dorothy Baker Edward Richard Martin a young Caucasian boy living in Los Angeles who discovered his love for piano at the age of fourteen along with the extraordinary ability to easily read music. Through a series of lucky events, he managed to meet and learn from the musicians he admired so much. And with incredible willpower at such an early age, he managed to master jazz piano and trumpet in no time at all. Having lived with his aunt and uncle all of his life, Rick Martin had become very independent and unlike any other child his age. On the first day of high school, he walked by a church called All Souls’ Mission, went inside, and picked up a hymnal. He began to play every song in that book on the piano that was available to him at the church. He didn’t stop practicing until it was dark and even found himself able to play certain songs in the dark, since he couldn’t find the light switch. Every day after that, he would go to the church to play instead of school. Rick always found the church empty until one day, when the All Souls’ themselves came by early for one of their meetings.
