12. So, there were many problems with Marx and Engels' theories. In Russia and China they were put together with the theories of Lenin, Stalin and Mao and they became the official ideology of the state. However, many of the ideas they put forward do contain interesting insights into the nature of society, and are still influential. "Neo-Marxism" (new Marxism) is one of the main influences on world system development theory, and is still very fashionable. One of the problems which Marx and Engels had was that when they started writing, capitalism was still in an early stage of development, and the working classes was not very well organized. In fact Marx's description of capitalism is nearly all based on Manchester and the workers in the cotton industry in the early 19th century. The militant workers of the period were not the cotton workers at all, but the craftsmen who had been replaced by the new industries. Many workers still moved back and forth from the cities to the countryside looking for seasonal work. In the summer they worked in the country, moving back to the cities in winter. Also the factories were still fairly small. It was only in the 1880s and 1890s that large unions developed and workers also became
