Globalization and information technology: Castells and  The Information  Age   In this outline, I want to talk about the impact of information technology on society,  not only in Japan but also in the rest of the world, using mainly the recent three- volume work by Manuel Castells,  The Information Age . This work is nearly 1500  pages long, so here  I will provide something of a road map to the issues which  Castells covers the during the course of his analysis. Every ten years or so someone  comes along and manages to make sense of what is going on in the world by putting  together the work of scholars who normally don’t read each other, and Castells’ work  is the latest example this kind of broad synthesis. One feature of Castells’ work is  that he able to link together both the collapse of the economies and states in regions
