Meiosis · Asexual reproduction- single parent splits, buds, or fragments, to produce 2 or more individuals o Creates a genetically identical clone · Sexual reproduction - union of 2 sex cells ( gametes ) forms a single cell called a zygote · Results in variation, offspring may be more suited or less suited to their environment · Homologous chromosomes- partner chromosome in a cell, similar in size, shape, and the position of their centromeres · Diploid- nucleus with 2 sets of chromosomes · Haploid- single set of chromosomes · Polyploid- 3 or more sets of chromosomes · About 80% of all flowering plants are polyploid · Meiosis- cell division that reduces chromosome number · Consists of Meiosis I and Meiosis II · · Interphase · Chromosomes duplicate in S phase, before meiosis begins · · Prophase I · Chromatids are still elongated and thin, homologous chromosomes come to lie lengthwise
