Intro to Sociology The Sociological Perspective Introduction Why do we (people) marry? What are the rules of marriage? Sociology : the study of human society. Our social world guides human action Why study sociology? What do these have to do with Sociology? Sociological Imagination Sociological Imagination looks at how historical events impact normal events in an individual’s life. (Generally people do not realize what happens until after it is done) Homework Interview a family member (preferably someone who is 2 generations older) Ask them to point out major events in their life (ie. College? Military? Work? Marriage? Births? Divorce? Did they move? Death?) Create a timeline of these events Due day after tomorrow What can this tell us about people? The Sociological Perspective Look beyond commonly held beliefs There are other reasons than those that are apparent “We do it therefore everyone must” The society we live in affects our perspective Why will you go to college? Society can dictate individual choices (marriage and death)
