Madison MacKayUS History 2 FinalThe first historical conspiracy that has always intrigued me is Oak Island it’ssupposed money pit. What first sparked my interest was watching the show “Curse ofOak Island” about a year ago with my aunt. It really interested me that there could betons of treasure and things buried in this 100 foot vault of sorts. I was hooked from thefirst episode I watched. Two brothers, Marty and Rick Lagina, are the people that areexploring and digging trying to find this money pit on Oak Island, which is just off thecoast of Nova Scotia, Canada.Nobody really knows exactly what the money pit holds. There have been somany different theories on it. One theory is that long ago a pirate buried all of histreasures and wealth in the money pit. Another theory is that the Ark of the Covenant isat the bottom of the pit. The final theory that I have heard about the pit is that the HolyGrail is at the bottom of the 100 feet. The thing that I find interesting about the money pitis what Marty and Rick know about. They know that there is a wooden platform every 10feet in the pit. They have also found different remnants of what they believe were boobytraps (Homer). What is the point of this if there isn’t something valuable at the bottom? Why would they put these measures in place if they weren’t putting something into thepit? In the mid 19th century, a letter written by treasure hunter Jotham B. McCullyexplained that an earlier digger had found a stone in the pit at about 90 feet deep in1804. The stone was reportedly 2 or 3 feet long and 12 to 16 inches wide. It resembleda dark granite with an olive tinge, and represented no rock native to Nova Scotia. Thestone also had cryptic symbols whose meanings have conjured up a lot of debates. Many people translated the symbols, one translation stating that they said “Forty feetbelow two million pounds are buried”. However, many researchers argue that it wasrepresentative of the French and suggest that the symbols were connected to theKnights Templar. It is very unfortunate because the stone has not been seen since theearly 1900s, which means we cannot use our modern technology to try and decode itfurther (Homer).I personally find this entire mystery so intriguing. I would more so side with theidea that it is some pirate treasure at the bottom of the pit, assuming the pit even exists.
