Old Man is the father of Joe who wins much money from betting on Kircubbin and meets his untimely death while racing his horse Gilford on the racetrack George Gardner is the jockey of Kzar who advises the Old Man to bet against him and consoles Joe after the Old Man died. Tommy Archibald is the jockey of Kircubbin who wins the race and makes the Old Man much richer after he had placed a bid of five thousand francs. Two minor characters (and one-sentence description of each) Mrs. Meyers is the caretaker of a boarding house who lives in Chantilly and prepares Joe’s lunch Holbrook is an acquaintance of the Old Man who argues with him at the Galleria
