Study Form Title: “I’m a Fool” Author and date: Sherwood Anderson , 1922 Four main characters (and one-sentence description of each) The Narrator is a nineteen year old swipe who makes a ridiculous lie to impress a girl Burt is a huge African American who is a skilled jockey and has compassionate, soft eyes Miss Lucy Wessen is a beautiful woman in the grandstands that the narrator likes. Mr. Mathers is a wealthy coal mine owner who owns horses and whose identity is used as a facade by the narrator Two minor characters (and one-sentence description of each) Mildred is the narrator’s sister who scolds him for accepting a disgraceful job as a swipe. Wilbur Wessen is the seemingly affluent brother of the woman that the narrator likes. Three main settings (and one-sentence description of each) Grandstands symbolize vicilation and obsession with materialism Horsetrack and stables represent nature in its idyllic nature: primitive and animalistic The train station is the setting in which the climax occurs : the narrator’s epiphany of the consequences of his deception. One paragraph plot outline: The narrator, young and naïve, needs a job. He works as a swipe with a friend Burt and loves his job. While on the job, he finds a woman, Lucy Wessen, in the stands that he fondly likes. To impress her, he assumes a false identity of a wealthy son of the man who owned some of the racetrack horses. His plan works, spending much time with her, but realizes, in the long run, he had made a grave mistake because he will never see her again and he cannot contact her anymore because he gave her false information.
