Period 4 Mr. Annarelli’s AP European History Course Cesare Beccaria Outline By: Blake Leamy and Arich Morales Biography born March 15 th 1738 into an aristocratic family in Milan, Italy Jesuit educated and received his degree in 1758. o Began showing great aptitude and ability in mathematics but the teachings of Montesquieu sent him in the path of economics. o His earlier writings reflect his understanding of economic reforms “The Academy of Fists” really opened Beccaria’s mind. o His friends Pietro and Alessandro Verri encouraged him to read Enlightenment authors of France and England and write essays. Many great leaders of different countries praised his work on the essay about crime and punishment, such as Katherine the Great, Maria Theresa of Austria- Hungry and quoted by Voltaire, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Reserved and somewhat taciturn in his social contacts o Significantly affected his popularity during his lifetime o Most notably, the French intellectuals welcomed him to their country and
