COURSE AND CONTACT INFORMATION Course: General Chemistry (CHEM 11-13) Semester: Fall semester 2011 Time: Tues-Thurs 12:45-2:00 PM Location: MPA 309 INSTRUCTOR Name: David E. Ramaker Campus Address: Office-Samson 316, Lab-Cor 308 Phone: Off- 202-994-6934, Home- 703-451-4495 E-mail: ramaker@gwu.edu Office hours: Tues and Thurs 11-12 or by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION Chemistry 11 is the first semester of a two-semester general chemistry sequence designed for undergraduate science majors. Chapters 1 through 11 of the textbook will be covered during the first semester. See detailed class outline on Page 6 COURSE PREREQUISITE None TEXT “Chemistry , The Central Science” by Brown, Lemay, and Bursten, 12th Edition, Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2006. Earlier editions may be used without consequence. LEARNING OUTCOMES : As a result of completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify and classify acids/bases, types of reactions, the states and properties of matter, oxidation/reduction, and other concepts in chemistry 2. Know, comprehend, and understand the fundamentals of atoms and apply them to gain knowledge of and predict the electronic structure of atoms and the geometry of molecules 3. Evaluate the information given in a problem or question, organize it, and then compute quantitative answers involving stoichiometry, moles, thermochemistry, and heats of reaction. [For information on learning outcomes and course assessment, see http://www.gwu.edu/~apira/courseassessment.html ] GRADING Letter grades are not given for individual exams but averages and grade ranges will be given. A final numerical average for the course is determined as follows: Lecture Exams 42% (14% for each) Quiz 10% Laboratory 20% Final Exam 28% The final letter grade is assigned based on the total numerical average for the entire course.

NOTE: THERE ARE NO EXTRA CREDIT PROJECTS. ALSO, FAILED EXAMS MAY NOT BE RETAKEN IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A HIGHER SCORE. EXAMINATIONS: There will be three examinations that will be given during the usual lecture period. There will be a two-hour final exam given at the end of the semester. The exam schedule is as follows: First Lecture Exam: T Sept. 27 Chaps 1-4 Second Lecture Exam: R Oct. 27 Chaps 5-8 Third Lecture Exam: R Dec. 8 Chaps 9-11 Final Exam: Not yet announced Chaps 1-11 The final exam is all inclusive covering chapters 1-11. NOTE: IN ACCORD WITH UNIVERSITY POLICY, THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE GIVEN DURING THE FINAL EXAM PERIOD AND NOT THE LAST WEEK OF THE SEMESTER. The date for this final is determined by the registrar’s office and cannot be change by me. Therefore, do NOT make airline reservations or plans to leave campus on a date before this exam.
