CHAPTER 3 Decorative designs command attention: -Optical illusions (eye can be fooled) -Cultural values (acceptance of others) Visual Perception : Choosing the best interpretation of available visual cues 2 Aspects of Visual Perception: 1. Stimulation -Sensory awareness of visual image or cue 2. Interpretation -Mental recognition that visual image represents familiar object Visual Illusion : occurs when something is not what it appears to be - Misinterpreted or misapplied visual cues - Created and controlled - Cultural and physical desired affects Cognitive Learning (Academic- go to school, class; use books) - Deals with factual, intellectual and mental things - Conscious learning Affective Learning (Day to day basis; from birth) - Deals with feeling, attitudes, values, beliefs, emotions, subjective judgments Cultural Conditioning: 1. Opinions about clothing 2. Concepts of beauty and ugliness 3. What constitutes acceptable appearance 4. Degrees of susceptibility or resistance to visual illusions
