TEXTURE CHAPTER -Visible & tangible structure of a surface or substance -Critical to apparel 1. It’s the medium from which apparel is made 2. Appeals to 3 senses: sight, touch, hearing 3 Aspects of Texture: 1. Tactile qualities of a surface (how fabric feels-hand) 2. Tactile qualities of a manipulated 3-D substance (looks soft, feels soft) 3. Textiles Components: 1. Fiber content-the basic chemicals yarns in which fabric substance is made 2. Yarn structure- when fibers are spun into yarns; direction of twist, piles… 3. Fabric structure- provide the most dramatic and easily seen distances; felt, lace, netting, crochet, macramé… 4. Finishes- mechanical, chemical, both aesthetic (pleasing to the eye-bleach, emboss, glaze…) and functional (purpose-waterproof, perm press, flame retardant…) Fiber Content: 1. Long, filament fibers- -shinier, smoother, cooler touch -stronger 2. Short, staple fibers -duller, rougher, fuzzier, warmer touch -weaker
