--google “aspb”—american society of plant biologists Why study plants? – will be on exam 2 From Website: (look more in depth) Plants, like most animals are multicellular eukaryotes Plants are diverse o Plants have evolved the ability to thrive in diverse land habitats o People at work who can see plants report significantly greater job satisfaction to those who cant Plants are amazing living organisms We could not live without plants o Plants produce most of the oxygen that we breathe o Plants produce most of the energy chemically stored energy we consume as food and burn for fuel o Plants produce an amazing assortment of useful chemicals Glucose, syrup, wood, Food, building sources Chemicals in plants are used in chemotherapeutic agents Actually toxins We can’t live without oxygen o Joseph priestly recognized that an animal’s breathing “injured” air. An animal kept in a sealed container would eventually die He also recognized that plants have the ability to “restore” the air. We now know that they produce oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis Plants fix carbon dioxide energy rich-molecules we animals can use as food o Plants convert CO2 gas into sugars which is photosynthesis (making sugars/glucose) Plants can produce an amazing assortment of chemicals o Botanicals: Medicine that are obtained from plants and can be used for certain ailments Vitamins, caffeine, morphine Why study plants? o To help conserve endangered plants and threatened environments o To learn more about the natural world o To better harness the abilities of plants to provide us with food, medicine, and energy o If we know more about plants we can genetically modify them and harvest them
