I. “I bumped into Charlie Ravioli today,” she says. “He was working.” Then she added brightly, “But we hopped into a taxi.” What happened then? we ask. “We grabbed lunch,” she says. (117) A summary involves reporting something in an abridged form, while staying as close to the original as possible. Sometimes in a summary we spell out details and give extra information that is implicit in the text, to bring the reader up to speed with what is going on . In the above extract, Gopnik reports a conversation that he and his wife have with their daughter Olivia, about her day with her imaginary friend. Olivia recounts bumping into Charlie Ravioli, and then hopping into a taxi and grabbing lunch, even though he was working that day. An analysis involves explaining the meaning of a given passage by dwelling on what you find most interesting. You are no longer reporting you are saying something about
