Unformatted text preview: Anannya Dasgupta Basic Comp October 21, 2010 Workshop Final Draft -2 1) Developing an argument 2) Making sure the connection paragraphs works 3) Student paper: Kim Chan Other things to remember: 1) Look at the quotes and paragraphs handout (it was given to you for a reason!) 2) DONOT use examples or evidence from outside the readings. 3) No thesis or vague thesis = vague paper that will likely not pass. 4) Do not use more than on block quote in a paper. In fact it is okay if you don’t use any at all. If your block quote, if there is one in your paper, makes sure it is only 4 lines long. 5) Meet the page requirements. Your paper must be 5-6 pages long. Really. Do not try to achieve the “look” of 5 pages. (large creative fonts, too much space, playing with margins… I know all the tricks ) Developing an Argument It is tempting to write a paper by making a claim in the thesis statement and then giving each body paragraph one reason each and that can lead to a passing paper. But, a good paper develops an argument. The best way to do that is to develop a series of questions that each paragraph answers. Also complex sentences (look in your grammar books to see what words are used to write dependent clauses) make good topic sentences because they allow for qualifications, reasoning, logic and nuance. Example from Kim’s paper: Thesis: Symbols are the easiest way for people to understand certain qualities of a collective identity; people compare something to a group to make certain characteristics more visible in order to prove a point. BP#1 : Symbols allow people to take what they want to see and mold into something others can understand better or relate to. BP#2 : These symbols represent a group of people with one identity, which can be simplified into certain specific characteristics. BP#3 : People symbolized by busyness or self-consumption begin to embody/conform to society’s expectations or representations of them. BP#4: When using a symbol and comparing two things that are thought to be very different, people are able to emphasize on a certain point, such as busyness or power. Conc: Although each person has their own identity, there are always certain traits people share and in this case, New Yorkers share the idea of busyness and Americans share the desire to be the best. Developing Kim’s Thesis Thesis: Symbols not only highlight a prominent quality that a group of people might collectively identify as a self-representation, but also make it easier to communicate that idea to others. BP#1: Symbols represent groups of people with a single visible idea. (What are the symbols in each essay? Do they function in the same exact ways?) BP#2: What comes to be associated as a symbol for a group is always a conscious choice. (How are symbols created? Who creates the symbols in each essay? Olivia or Gopnik? Hitt or the American pop culture? At what point do Ravioli and the dinosaurs start becoming symbols?...
