Node 1 is fixed to an immovable wall. Note that element 4, although it is shown slightly below the other three elements, is actually in-line with the other three, but connected only at nodes 1 and 4. Node 4 has 2 elements attached to it and must move as a single displacement. Develop the matrix stiffness model for this structure. This includes the 4x4 unrestrained system stiffness matrix and the 3 x 3 restrained stiffness matrix. a) Remove the 500 lb. load. If element 2 is heated 100 degrees Fahrenheit, find the stresses in each element. Be sure to specify which elements are in tension or compression. b) Remove the 500 lb. load. If elements 1, 2 and 3 have no temperature change, but element 4 is cooled 50 degrees Fahrenheit, find the stresses in each element.
