David Lun HIEA 117 Professor Stefan Tanaka Summer Session 1 Paper 3 Sophisticated Prerequisites of Evil To be civilized is to be aware and conscious of one’s actions. Animals for example, are not civilized due to the fact that the acts that they commit are not based on conscious thought but rather instinctive motives to survive. Furthermore the sophistication of civilization creates a hierarchy which in turns creates desires and greed. Accordingly, Wakizu in Kurosawa Akira’s film Throne of Blood, characterizes a civilized being that commits evil acts. He is aware and conscious of the treason and murder in which he commits. Unlike animals though, Wakizu did not commit these acts as a means to survive but rather because of his temptation to obtain power. His civilized nature urged him to seize the opportunity to rise up in rank within the society to become the King of the Spider Web Castle. The ghost in the film represents a strangeness straddling along the borders of the spiritual and civilized realm being so deeply connected to both realms that it is unclear whether the ghost controls the fate of civilized beings or merely acts as an agent.
