Emily Moonan 905442263 Personality Article Questions 1. Specific theories define temperament in a variety of ways; describe a general definition of temperament as proposed by this article. The general definition the article gives is that temperament is “biologically influenced behaviors that vary widely across individuals” (Deater-Deckard, 264). These behaviors are observed starting in the child’s infancy and become more and more stable over time as the child grows up and “across settings” (Deater-Deckard, 264). 2. In this article, temperament is divided into two aspects that are important when considering reading development, Effortful Control (EC) and Surgency (S). Briefly describe each aspect and how they differ. Effortful control is a factor that “represents self-regulatory capacity and includes four facets: Attention Focusing, Inhibitory Control, Low Intensity Pleasure, and Perceptual Sensitivity

Surgency is a factor that “represents high-energy activation and is derived from four scales: Impulsivity, High Intensity Pleasure, Activity Level and low levels of Shyness” (Deater-Deckard, 264). Studies have shown that elementary school students that are more successful have “greater task persistence and less distractibility”; both of these behaviors are associated with EC (Deater-Deckard, 265). The article explains that Surgency is associated with “poorer reading and high motor activity, and higher impilsivity” (Deater-Deckard, 265). 3.
