Bio 1006 Epiphytes: plants live on other plants o Orchids o Like coral reefs in the sky because provide a whole new community for organisms Co-evolution: when plants and animals evolve together o Ants and bull thorn plant Ants live in the thorns and protect the tree from animals that are looking to eat their leaves and from other plants that will take nutrients out of the soil that would otherwise be used by the bull thorn plant Commensalism: o Flower mites travel in the nostrils of the hummingbirds and go from flower to flower, this is quite close to parasitism because sometimes blocks the breathing of the hummingbird and reduces flight efficiency o Algae grows on the sloth’s hair and bugs live/travel on the hair because they eat the algae off of the sloth’s hair Competitive Exclusion: no 2 species can occupy the same niche at the same time, one will exclude the other Resource Partitioning: resource (food, etc.), how do animals that eat the same food co- exist? o
