Women’s Studies- 2/15/10 Chapter 2: how we understand equality, what is its parts, what it inequality, why is it so hard to stop inequality o Must know that our inequality isn’t the same as another person’s inequality People aren’t equally unequal (either more privileged or less privileged) o First Wave Women’s Movement-systems stood in their way of reaching inequality Systems – problems with norms and values (women don’t have a political voice=norm), government, social institutions, military Norms/values= a set of beliefs (women belong in the kitchen and in the home) Oppression by Maryland Fry, 1993 o Suffering-sick, dying, not in a good place VS. oppression-kept down because of race, gender, wealth, class and therefore do not have access or being without options that others have access to o Ex in article- for a woman, if she chooses not to have sex, she may be called many mean things and get pressure from family and friends o
