23:16 The Menstrual Cycle - standard cycle between 21-35 days. (shorter or longer, underlying reasons need to be  looked at more carefully) -some people will start out really regimented, others will be varied over time. -duration 3-6 days.  -not externally influenced by other hormones. 20-60 cc (wide range of blood loss) -estrogen influences bone growth as well as menstruation. -growth spurt- estrogen is found in body fat. You need to have a certain amount of body  composition in order to produce enough estrogen for menarche. -question about environmental influences on estrogen. PHASES OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE: -under the influence of the ovaries and the uterus. -Ovarian phase and Uterine Phase.

Ovarian: 1. follicular phase- egg development 2.ovulation- egg release. 3. luteal phase- ? Uterine Phase: 1. proliferative – preparing for the opportunity to support an egg, cells increasing in  number 2. secretory- cells are releasing nutrients, increasing in size. Hormone regulation Ovarian cycle: For the purposes of discussion, we are going to talk about a 28 phase cycle. Ovulation occurs in the middle, so day 14. FIRST half of cycle is very very unpredictable, and the second half is very predictable. -so if a 30 day cycle, then ovulation happens around day 16.
