IE 370 Homework 4 1) Copper is being reduced from a hot-rolled 3/8 in diameter rod to a final diameter of 0.1 in. by wire drawing through a series of dies. The final write should have a yield strength in excess of 50,000psi and an elongation greater than 10%. Use the figure below to determine the range of suitable amount of final cold work. (hint: decide the upper and lower limit of the amount of strain) Mechanical properties of pure copper as a function of the amount of cold work (expressed in percent) 2) Describe the different roll mill configurations 3) Explain the barreling effect in the open die forging process. 4) What are the advantages of the extrusion process? What are the differences between indirect and direct extrusion? What are the advantages of indirect extrusion over direct extrusion? 5) What are the advantages of thread cutting? 6) Are there any limits for the die angle chosen in extrusion? How does it affect the extrusion process?

Unformatted text preview: 7) Describe the three major sheet metal forming processes. 8) What is springback in sheet metal bending? What is bend allowance? 9) For the punching process, given that the blanked piece has diameter=10 in, sheet stock thickness=2 in and allowance a=0.1, design the size of punch and die. 10) Describe the wire drawing process. 11) Why should there be a clearance between the punch and die in sheet metal cutting and drawing processes? What is the expression for calculating the clearance in sheet metal cutting and how is it different from the clearance in drawing processes? 12) The following are measures of feasibility for several proposed cup drawing perations; which of the operations are likely to be feasible? (hint: DR drawing ratio, r= (Db-Dp)/Db, please use the guideline about the range of DR and t/D in lecture slides). (a) DR = 2.3, (b) DR = 1.5, (c) r = 0.7, (d) r = 40%, and (e) t/D = 2%....
