Chemistry 312 Names: Exercise 5: SALCs, molecular orbitals and energies An octahedral complex such as [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ belongs to the (natural) O h point group. Pick the coordinate system such that x, y and z all lie along some metal-ligand bond. 1. Will cobalt’s 4s orbital “point” toward (and therefore have any chance of overlapping) the 2s ligand orbitals on the ammonia molecules? If yes, draw the overlap of all six 2s ligand orbitals with the cobalt 4s orbital. 2. Of cobalt’s three 4p orbitals, p x , p y and p z , which of them will actually “point” toward (and therefore have any chance of overlapping) the 2s ligand orbitals on the ammonia molecules? If any of them do, draw the overlap of those cobalt 4p orbitals with only those ammonia 2s orbitals that interact with them. 3. Of cobalt’s five 3d orbitals, : d xy , d xz , d yz , d x 2 –y 2 , d z 2 , which will actually “point” toward (and therefore have any chance of overlapping) the 2s ligand orbitals on the ammonia molecules? If any of them do, draw the overlap of those cobalt 3d orbitals with

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
