Will cobalt’s 4s orbital “point” toward (and therefore have any chance of overlapping) the 2s ligand orbitals on the ammonia molecules? If yes, draw the overlap of all six 2s ligand orbitals with the cobalt 4s orbital. 2. Of cobalt’s three 4p orbitals, p x , p y and p z , which of them will actually “point” toward (and therefore have any chance of overlapping) the 2s ligand orbitals on the ammonia molecules? If any of them do, draw the overlap of those cobalt 4p orbitals with only those ammonia 2s orbitals that interact with them. 3. Of cobalt’s five 3d orbitals, : d xy , d xz , d yz , d x 2 –y 2 , d z 2 , which will actually “point” toward (and therefore have any chance of overlapping) the 2s ligand orbitals on the ammonia
