The quadruple Re-Re bond is made of one ο bond, two π bonds and one δ bond. a. Consider the set of 5d orbitals on each rhenium atom: d xy , d xz , d yz , d x 2 –y 2 , d z 2 . Assign each of these orbitals to the type ( ο , π or δ ) of bond it will make. Note that each orbital will only interact with another orbital of the same type, e.g., a d xy will not interact with a d xz . b. Given the symmetry of the molecule (two square planar complexes held together face- on by the quadruple bond), which (if any) of the d orbitals are expected to be degenerate ? Hint: you might want to determine which orbitals are “pointing” at the ligands and which are not. 2. a. Construct an MO energy diagram for tetrahedral [VCl 4 ] . ignoring π interactions .
