Word Count 1084 Nut 11 2 June 2011 Indulge Away to a Healthy Heart Chocolate is consumed in many households in the United States. Since dark chocolate is made from plants, it contains cocoa flavonoids that act as antioxidants (3), which after oral intake increase both the total antioxidant capacity in plasma and help to relax blood pressure through the production of nitric oxide (1). Antioxidants in dark chocolate are known to protect the body from aging caused by free radicals that ultimately lead to heart disease. Dark chocolate also helps prevent platelets from sticking together and forming clots that could potentially lead to heart attack or stroke (5). This promoted researchers to ask, can eating dark chocolate decrease your risk for cardiovascular disease? Dark chocolate has been linked to reduce heart disease through lowering blood pressure, decreasing inflammation and increasing blood vessel and platelet function. Does eating dark chocolate reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease? In a study by the European Heart Journal, research suggested the effect of dark chocolate on cardiovascular disease has increased greatly. Although many people avoid daily chocolate consumption, research shows that several grams of chocolate per day actually improves endothelial and platelet function by reducing blood pressure as well as markers of inflammation. In this study, associations of habitual dark chocolate consumption was investigated with measured blood pressure and myocardial infarction – more commonly known as a heart attack – and stroke to determine its effect.
