Darren Andolina Wednesday 8:10-9pm 27 January 2010 Does Milk Really do a Body good? As children, the first substance ever that we consume is milk from our mother. This nurtures us from babies, provides us with important nutrients and helps to make us strong so that we can adjust to our bodies and learn how to do new things. However, human beings are the only known species that continue to drink milk after the first couple of years that they are born. So when we hear about some people becoming lactose intolerant, the first question that comes to mind is, why? Did they not continue drinking milk throughout their entire lives? Was there a replacement, like soymilk that they drank instead? Is there something special about their DNA that prevents them from being able to drink milk? Or is there just something really wrong that is preventing them from being able to drink milk? Milk intolerance is caused by a genetic change that occurred throughout one’s life, the location and conditions in which one lived, and their access and/or ability to attain milk. Genetic changes tell us many different things about the evolutionary history of milk tolerance in human populations. Some adults cannot tolerate milk as adults because sometime throughout their lives they developed a genetic alteration known as the lactase gene, which develops from lactose persistence, is now preventing them from being able to accept lactose without getting sick. Sarah Tishkoff, a researcher from the University of Maryland, conducted a series of experiments in East African countries designed to test the tolerance that each group had
