1 EE 540 Class Notes Chapter 2. Densities N m of atoms in level (m). 2.1. The 4-step method. In this Section we will describe the “4-step method” for constructing rate equations for the time- dependent (and steady-state) values of the number density N n of laser atoms in level (n), perhaps in (solid, liquid or gaseous) host medium, at a specified location (x,y,z) and time (t), while these atoms are interacting with a laser beam of intensity I ν Wm -2 and frequency ν Hz. The 4 steps are as follows. 1) Draw and label the pertinent energy level diagram for laser atoms, as in the example in Fig.1. Include only those levels which you expect may be occupied during (±) amplification. 2) Draw an arrow on the diagram for each process you expect to cause transitions, as in Fig.1. Label each arrow using symbols that you will use in the rate equations to be constructed. 3)
