Field Work Guide: PY3114 Evolutionary Approaches to Behaviour The following notes apply to the Richmond Park and London Zoo trips. They will take you through a number of examples to help you prepare your data for the poster assessment. This guide should be read in conjunction with the trip specific notes available on UEL Plus. There are also separate notes on poster preparation available on UEL Plus. Example 1: Red Deer ␣␣␣␣␣␣ see how we would investigate the ratio of looking about to grazing in red deer (Cervus elaphus) and see if this changes as a consequence of group size. You might have reason to ask this question because red deer have an evolutionary history of being predated and will have possibly evolved strategies for evading predation. One such strategy might be vigilance. In a group many eyes will increase the vigilance and reduce the success of predators, so perhaps larger groups allow for longer periods of grazing as the vigilance can be shared across more individuals. Vigilance is a behavioural category, but you will notice it is a functional ␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣ want to assume anything so we need to come up with a list of appropriate motor behavioural categories. Here is a limited list to get started: Looking = neck straight and upright and its head above its shoulders Grazing = head down, cropping vegetation with its mouth Head down = head lowered below the knees The short codes for use in your notes will be L, G and H. ␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣ ␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣␣ behaviours, but you may well find that new categories occur to you as you work. We will want to collect data about the frequency of L, G and H across group sizes, which means you will need to collect data from more than one group.
