UNDERSTANDING GROUPS AND  TEAMS Group Two or more interacting and interdependent  individuals who come together to achieve some specific  goals. Formal Groups It is defined by the organization’s structure and have  designated work assignments and specific tasks.  Examples may be command groups, tasks groups,  cross functional teams and self managed teams.

UNDERSTANDING GROUPS AND  TEAMS Informal Groups These are social groups and occurs naturally in the  work place in response to the need for social contact.  They tend to form around friendship and common  interests.

UNDERSTANDING GROUPS AND  TEAMS Stages of Group Development Forming People join the group and then define the group purpose, structure  and leadership. Storming It is characterized by inter-group conflict. Norming It is characterized  by close relationships and cohesiveness. Performing It is stage of group development when the group is fully functional. Adjourning When members of temporary groups starts wrapping up their activities  rather than task performance.

TEAMS Status A position or rank within a group. Norms Standards or expectations that are accepted and  shared by a group’s members. Groupthink When a group exerts extensive pressure on an  individual to align his opinion with other’s opinions. Social loafing
