Modern Physics Lab: Beta Spectroscopy: Supplementary Notes Rex Tayloe Department of Physics, Indiana University 2/18/03 Last Revised: 2/3/04 Goals : Investigate the magnetic spectrometer. Measure the Beta-spectrum of 137 Cs. Tasks: - Determine the energy loss of electrons in the spectrometer vacuum. How much error does this introduce into your measurements. - Estimate p for this spectrometer. How does this effect the choice of slit setting and current steps in the tasks below? - Measure the rate vs discriminator setting at a magnet current of 50mA and slit width ~5mm to determine where to set the discriminator. - Measure the magnetic field with the Hall probe as a function of current (this can be done concurrently with the next task). Are there hysteresis effects? - Determine the count rate vs magnet current with a wide slit setting in ~5mA steps from 0-100mA. Do the same with the baffle inserted to measure background. Identify the features of this spectrum. - Do a fine scan
