Notes- COMM 160 1/14/10 Theories of Performance (pg 1-14) -theory: hypothesis -asking of questions (what? Why? How?) -performance is theory to explore/explain world and self (and relationship between the two) -articulate how view world through performance -language and theory intertwined: -language limits theory: way articulate determines how create/see. Language based off creativity -how use language depends on how observe -3 ways use language: 1) representational: language neutral mode- how use it and how view it -social-scientific realm. More observation of world -language used is describing what we believe it is. how used 2) Understanding: everyone agrees about what it is -based on community (what we decide it is)- relative to each community -our class could use ball and another could would look at it and think it’s a hat 3) Suspicion: ex: mailman (how’s that obscuring reality- assuming men work. If you’re feminist- you see this word as sexist -oppression: using language to obscure oppression

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
