Notes- Tuesday -1/19/10 -mimesis: from Aristotle’s poetics: means to mimic or imitate real life for cathartic reasons -led to anti-theater sentiment- seen as less than, for lower-class because they couldn’t tell what real entertainment was -led to vaudeville- over the top, slapstick humor -poiesis: creating (making not faking) truths -Martin HJeideger- 1970s philosopher: world created through poiesis -performer creates culture -kenisis: about the making and breaking of social and political norms -performance as key term: it’s contested, slippery and unstable -must use terms of the word to describe what it is (ex: freedom: free to have freedom) -use part of term to describe term (like race: culture and color are part of race but doesn’t describe what it is) -to describe “performing”: use words like perform, acting- all parts of performance not describing what it actual is -different definitions of key terms because don’t’ want to pin down as just one thing -performance is 3 things: (also a heightened mode of reality)
