Materials Selection for Engineering Design (MTL 700) Assignment #1 Due date October 10 th , 2011 Problem #1 ( 30 marks ) You have been asked to select the material to be used as the structural component for the lid of a laptop computer. This component is meant to protect the screen from damage and thus one of its primary design elements is that it should not deflect more than a certain amount ( δ ) under a fixed maximum load (if it deflects more than this the screen will touch the keyboard and damage the screen). Considering a laptop that is meant to be “ultraportable” and thus needs to be as light as possible (a) Define the function, objective, constraint(s) and free variables for this problem. (b) Identify the objective equation and constraint equation(s). From these develop an appropriate materials index. (c) Based on the materials index and all constraints choose one best material for this application. Justify your selection.
