Sample Exam Questions Mammalogy 401, Fall 2010 – Exam 2 Rafting is a possible explanation for how Platyrrhini primates evolved from Catarrhini primates and became isolated approximately 35 million years ago. What is rafting? What landmasses are involved in this hypothesis? What biogeographical factors allow rafting to be a viable hypothesis for the evolution of the platyrrhines? Why is the extinct order Condylarthra of special interest/importance in the history of mammals? What are carnassial teeth (which teeth and what do they do)? Do all members of the order Carnivora have carnassial teeth? Discuss the evolutionary history of the family Equidae. Your answer should discuss sizes of ancestral horses, continents where horses originated and dispersed to, any general trends in morphology, what happened in the Pleistocene, and how equids got to North America in recent times. Discuss how hair evolved in mammals. You may make drawings if you’d like, but it’s not required. If you do draw a picture, please provide text explaining your drawings.
