Ch 15 – Mental Heath Disorders History Middles ages: demons and witches 15 th century onward: asylums 1800s: Philippe Pinel and Dorothea Dix o Asylums are overcrowded and treatment isn’t good 1960/1970: medications were discovered to treat severe mental health disorders o Deinstitutionalization – US gov closed large state psychiatric institutions Now: o things have changed o stigma remains o mental health disorders are often seen as not “real” conditions Psychological disorder psychological dysfunction within an individual that is associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typical or culturally expected ( atypical response ) harmful dysfunction ex: dating (don’t go on dates b/c of extreme nervousness) prevalence of mental health disorders o 1 in 3 lifetime prevalence o Be aware of words Anxiety Disorders Generalized anxiety disorder Panic attacks/panic disorder Phobias Obsessive compulsive disorder Post traumatic stress disorder Panic Attacks Pounding heart, sweating, shaking Trouble breathing, chest pain Nausea, dizziness, chills/flushes Fear of losing control or dying Sudden onset, usually peaking at 10 min Panic attack panic disorder Repeated and unexpected panic attacks Leads to avoidance: “fear of the fear” Impacts daily functioning (e.g. job, social life) Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
