17 – Motown The Supremes “You Can’t Hurry Love” (1966) Top selling girl group o Formed in 1961 in Detroit o Diana Ross as main lead vocalist o Dozen #1 hits in the late 1960s Complex for (A B C B C B break A A A B) o But each section is comprised by pop-friendly hooks o Composed by Holland-Doizer-Holland trio Lyrical message about “waiting” for love imitated in music that makes you wait (for final B section) Motown Founded in 1957 by Berry Gordy, Jr. Named after the motor city (Detroit) The Funk Brothers (Motown band) o A house band, mostly African American o Almost all creative personnel were African American o Writers, arrangers, producers, musicians o Symbol of black musical achievement Remarkable hit factory o In 1970 alone, produced seven #1 hits o 1973 – the nation’s largest black-owned corporation Musical Themes Clear proof of African-American self sufficiency But aimed to create non-confrontational music
