Folk is not for audience but is for community while ritual is in front of an audience How are these ritual and folk dances learned? Represents divinity Kabuki came out of Noh, therefore the youngest. They are similar b/c they use dance, drama, and singing but how are they different? Dancing in Kabuki is quicker and acrobatic and the costumes, scenery, and make-up are more spectacular 6 common denominators in African dance: dancing on the earth with bare feet, imitates animals, crouched and bent forward, emphasis on improv and freedom of expression, propulsive rhythm which gives dance swinging motion, centriphical movement-coming out from hips Aruba use dance to communicate with gods and ancestors Hula dancing is an example of dance that changed over time. What was it originally? A hand dance that represented man’s communion with nature National dance of Israel is Hora, American is square dancing
