Moana Symbolism Essay Prabhleen Kaur Period 4 English 9 Ms. Weymouth “Listen. For a thousand years, I’ve only been thinking about keepin’ this hair silky, getting my hook, and being awesome, again.” This line is taken from Disney’s Moana, and it represents the importance of one of the symbols of the story: Maui’s Hook. In Moana, the two protagonists, Moana and Maui, find themselves venturing out on the sea to restore this heart. Along the way, there are many contributing factors to how the pair develop and learn past what they have been told about themselves and those around them. This is all through the help of many symbolic objects and people that Moana and Maui have eventfully encountered in their lives. Among these symbols are Maui’s Hook, The Stones, and Moana’s grandmother (Grandma Tala). These symbols help with character development throughout the story because they teach Maui and Moana realize and decide for themselves who they truly are, and where their destiny lies. Maui’s hook is an important symbol in the movie Moana because it helps advance the development of the characters in the movie. The hook acts as an “obstacle” that doesn’t allow Maui to reach self actualization, and accept who he truly is. He thinks that the material wealth of his hook is the determining factor of his worth.
