Prabhleen Kaur Adv Bio 2 February 1, 2019 Data Analysis: Gel Electrophoresis Lab In this lab, we performed gel electrophoresis on DNA samples of four family members, a known sickle cell patient, a known normal hemoglobin patient, and a DNA ladder. We injected the DNA samples into wells of gel and measured the distance traveled across the gel wells, hence, the length of the DNA strands. We did this by sending a current through the gel, and then looking at the results through UV light. The question we were trying to answer was which genotypes do each of the four family members have for the protein hemoglobin. According to the data, the daughter had sickle cell (SS), the mother and father were carriers (AS), and the son had a normal gene (AA). This is because Lane 5 was the DNA of a known normal gene, which very closely matched up to the son’s DNA sample. Lane 6 was a known sickle cell patient, which very closely matched the daughter’s DNA. The mother and father however, were carriers of both A and S (AS) because they had
