(DeH in Syllabus below) Gillis, Reader for MatSci 130: Reproduction of selected chapters from M e t z , 2000 Solved Problems in Physical Chemistry, Ch 3-11 (R1 in Syllabus below) Gordon, Principles of Phase Diagrams in Material Systems, Ch 3-8 (R3 in Syllabus below) COVERAGE: This course builds upon previous background in thermodynamics (MAE 105A) to provide an intermediate level treatment of the principles and techniques of thermodynamics and their application to materials. This course emphasizes the free energy functions, with applications to phase changes, mixtures, and phase equilibrium in materials systems. REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICIES: Homework problems (due in class each Tues.) 20% of course grade Midterm exams (R 21 Oct, T 23 Nov) 40% of course grade Final exam (M 06 Dec 3:00– 6:00 pm) 40% of course grade
